Sometimes you have to have to do something drastic in order to advance. Maybe that is breaking up or separating from a girlfriend or wife, quitting that job to pursue that freelance dream or taking a job and putting off that freelance dream. Whatever that drastic action is, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and do it.
This back and forth game, the delay tactics and the pausing hurts you more than failing does. Failing is a part of success, the part that comes with attempting something drastic to reach that success. What are you afraid of? If you really want something you just know it. And nothing will stand in your way.
What is done is done, and no amount of effort or regret can change that. This is true for everything in the world, so what is stopping you? What is stopping you from committing and doing that exercise, putting in the hours or working on your goals?
What are you afraid of?
Being Judged? – You don’t like being judged, or drawing attention to yourself? Guess what a first impression is? Everyone does it in the back of their head, so why let this stop you. You will always find nay-sayers and haters, and people that don’t agree with you. That is fine, because criticism is what’ll make you better. End of the day, no one cares because: they’re too busy wondering if you’re judging them.
Stop being loved? – If you go out and do your thing, and people stop loving you, will bullocks for them! Mind you, if that thing was hurtful emotionally of physically, then of course they’re opinion of you may change. If your thing was something that just didn’t work, and they changed their opinion of you because they think you failed, do you really want them if your life? Relationships come and go, but the strongest bonds endure!
Looking stupid or falling flat? – Hand in hand with being judged, you don’t want to put yourself out there to fail. Get over it, and develop a sense of humor about it. I got news for you: you’re going to fail, and you’re going to look stupid at it. People are going to laugh, and point. May as well join them! And then do it again! Don’t give up on that dream, and keep working at it. I guarantee the greats, like Gretzky, Jordan and Woods all did some stupid looking stuff in their day.
Hurting or offending someone? – “But I don’t want to hurt my wife”, hate to tell you, you already are. Dragging that relationship out, be it a marriage or a business related one, is hurting everyone. Sometimes you just have to quit, and that doesn’t make you a failure. If you’re worried about hurting someone feelings because your goals don’t line up, apologize and remember: do right by you.
(To be clear: I am not saying you go out and do something you know would be hurtful. Don’t do that, because you wouldn’t want that done to you. Just don’t worry about hurting someone’s feelings or offending them if your goals aren’t the same.)
Don’t be afraid!
Sometimes, something drastic is what the doctor has ordered, and it is the only way to move forward. Don’t be afraid to do that drastic something, because in life, timing is everything. Ask yourself what you’re afraid of out loud, and the answer will often sound stupid. Because most of our issues are stupid, and when you realize that, you’ll get down to business.
Try this for not just the drastic stuff, but everything you’re reluctant to do. Once you do this a couple times, you will see that you have ‘nothing to fear but fear itself’. You will do what you need to do, because you’re not afraid of the hang ups that usually impede you!
