Tips for Enjoying Your Life and Your Job

The following was originally posted on my other websites blog. Now that I am working to define that as more of a Web Design and Coding blog, it fits better right here on Timis.me. Originally titled How To Enjoy Your Life and Your Job and was written in April 2010, and I have not changed it, aside from the title (and ok, adding some links).

As I begin the redesign of my other sites, chances are good that I will move the posts I want to keep, but don’t fit with my vision moving forward. So feel free to subscribe to my RSS Feed to stay on top of them! Hope you enjoy.

How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job

You probably spend 40 percent of your waking time at work. Now start enjoying it!

I am trying to read more, period. Regardless of the nature of the book, I find reading relaxes me in a way a TV show or a movie cannot. Ideally I’d like to read books aimed at self improvement or skill building (no worries, I will fit the fantasy and sci-fi books in as well). So that is why I choose to start with a Dale Carnegie‘s book: How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job.

Facebook – It’s Over.

Dear Facebook,

It’s over. I am sorry, but I just can’t continue to deal with you or the time suck you’ve created in my life. Look, it’s not you – it’s me. I mean really, it is me. I am too weak to control the habitual act of continuously checking your news feeds. I am not above it, but that is why I am removing that temptation, that is you Facebook, from my life. Introducing Felix

For reasons out my control, I became dog-less for the first time in my lifetime – and although I had time to prepare, I was still really sad and heartbroken. It didn’t take me long to decide that I wanted another dog. I decided a puppy wasn’t the right option for me, but finding something that was slightly older and looking for a new home was. I began searching, checking the local humane society, animal rescues and Kijiji. I was expecting a little time before I’d find something, but I was wrong.

Shortly after starting to look I came across a beautiful dog at the Peterborough Humane Society, his name was Felix and he is a 9 month old German Shepard and Husky Dog. Continue reading

What you want and what you need

Sometimes I have to take a step back and have to look at things in a real objective light. Twice in the past two weeks now, I have had an opportunity to snap up a new phone I want at a reasonable price. But when I sit down and ask myself why I want the phone – the only answer that comes to mind is that I simply want the phone.

There is quite literally nothing wrong with my current phone and in fact, I really do like it. The money could be used on other spaces in my life (some debt for example). This really breaks down to what I want and what I need, and what I want is a new phone, it is certainly not what I need. What I need to do is control my impulses and spending habits. 30 Day Challenges

30 day challenges are something I’ve tried already, a couple times, and I have failed at some of them. But it is now something I am going to do again. In the past my challenges have been a little too ambitious in scope and what lead to me missing my marks. For me anyways, sometimes discussing things makes me think I’ve accomplished what I really haven’t. Matt Cutts talks about how he does it in the following video: Continue reading

Three Simple Tips For Dealing with People

Can you imagine the last time you went a day without dealing with someone? An average day, not one spent locked in your house with the intent on not dealing with people? Unless you’re living in the post-apocalyptic world or somewhere in the arctic circle (or somewhere as remote) chances are good you have to deal with at least one of the six plus billion people in the world. Not only will you have to deal with people, but not every person is a shiny happy person. Continue reading

Learning to Say NO!

Being assertive and telling people what I want has never been something I’ve been good at. I am a people-pleaser, and will go to great lengths and risk my own comfort to make people happy. And as much as I value the truth and honesty from my friends, I will more then often not say anything or simply avoid something I don’t want to do. I often change my plans to help meet a friend-in-need plans, and do things I don’t want to do in order to feel like I am helping a friend.

At some point I have just got to say no to those requests for dinner, or coffee, or just that trip to the gym. I’ve got to be honest and say I don’t have the time, I have other plans or that I just need some down time. I do alot, everyday I have something going on, and although I don’t mind doing my best to make time for friends. However saying no is sometimes a requirement, here are some ways I do it: Continue reading

Focus on Doing

I have been pretty lazy about posting updates of any kind on this blog. I haven’t really been pushing myself with any self improvement tasks lately. But it extends beyond that – I haven’t posted on my other website since late in 2010. I just haven’t been writing in general, and haven’t been doing much else other then going threw the motions.

Truth is, I have been focused less on talking about what I want to do and just doing it. In the past I have been more of a talk about what I want to accomplish, and just stopping there. Continue reading

Early Riser Challenge

My Challenge for February is to be an earlier riser. I’ve always figured myself as much more of a night person, and I hate getting up in the morning. I often find myself pushing the snooze button on my alarm clock several times in the morning. This is because I am not going to bed till much later then I should. So the trick will be the following: getting up and going to bed earlier. Continue reading

Focus on the Journey

Have you ever seen the movie “The Way of the Peaceful Warrior”? Or read the book? (Amazon Affiliate Link) I’ve done both, and enjoyed both. I saw the movie first, then went on to read the book. One of the moments that really stuck with me from the movie was where this discuss the three rules of life, and then the journey, and how the journey brings us happiness. I’ve embed the YouTube video below: Continue reading
