Movember 2011 – update 2

So we’re getting toward the end of my Movember Campaign (if you haven’t donated to someone, please consider me and team MOFAH) so I thought I’d provide a picture. And an update as to whom I’ve donated too. Because it is one thing to ask for donations, but I feel like I should set an example. Continue reading

Being Less Busy – On Email

In June of 2010 I changed the way I handle my email. And for a while that worked really, really well. And then I started a new job, and almost immediately I reverted back to the ways of old. I am a Blackberry user, and have had a smartphone since the days of Palm Treo. I like having the access right on my hip, but the problem is it creates a distraction and sometimes overwhelming feeling.

The other problem, I don’t very often reply to emails on my phone. I often use a computer with a full keyboard, that allows me to reflect on the email. So then I am reading emails, and sometimes I forget to reply, other times I drop what I am doing right away and respond. It creates busyiness, and stress – and I am looking to remove those from my life. So starting today, I am no longer going to be receiving emails on my phone. Continue reading

Movember 2011

For the second year now I will participate in Movember with the guys from OFAH as Team MOFAH. For another year, I grow a mustache and beg for your donations as I join men around the world growing mos to help raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. Prostate cancer rates in men are comparable to breast cancer rates in women, and is the most common type of cancer to afflict Canadian men.

In fact, 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Think about seven men in your life that are important to you – and one of those men could easily be affected. If the cancer isn’t detected early enough, they could have major complications from it. Continue reading

Trying Hot Yoga

Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years aimed at uniting body, mind and spirit. Yoga is considered very therapeutic and can help practitioners become more aware of body’s posture, alignment and patterns of movement. It makes the body more flexible and helps you relax even in the midst of a stressful environment. It helps people to feel fitter, be more energetic, be happier and peaceful.

And those are certainly all good draws – who doesn’t want to feel fitter, be more energetic and happy / peaceful? Continue reading

A Simple Tip to Enjoy Things More

How often do you plan things that you’re supposed to enjoy, and then you fail at enjoying them? Or the build up to them stresses you out and ruins the experience before you even experience it? How often are you just not present or focused on the task at hand; Worrying about work, or other issues? I would surmise fairly often for almost everyone.

So how do we go about enjoying something? It is actually really very simple: Continue reading

Tips for Enjoying Your Life and Your Job

The following was originally posted on my other websites blog. Now that I am working to define that as more of a Web Design and Coding blog, it fits better right here on Timis.me. Originally titled How To Enjoy Your Life and Your Job and was written in April 2010, and I have not changed it, aside from the title (and ok, adding some links).

As I begin the redesign of my other sites, chances are good that I will move the posts I want to keep, but don’t fit with my vision moving forward. So feel free to subscribe to my RSS Feed to stay on top of them! Hope you enjoy.

How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job

You probably spend 40 percent of your waking time at work. Now start enjoying it!

I am trying to read more, period. Regardless of the nature of the book, I find reading relaxes me in a way a TV show or a movie cannot. Ideally I’d like to read books aimed at self improvement or skill building (no worries, I will fit the fantasy and sci-fi books in as well). So that is why I choose to start with a Dale Carnegie‘s book: How to Enjoy Your Life and Your Job.

Facebook – It’s Over.

Dear Facebook,

It’s over. I am sorry, but I just can’t continue to deal with you or the time suck you’ve created in my life. Look, it’s not you – it’s me. I mean really, it is me. I am too weak to control the habitual act of continuously checking your news feeds. I am not above it, but that is why I am removing that temptation, that is you Facebook, from my life. Introducing Felix

For reasons out my control, I became dog-less for the first time in my lifetime – and although I had time to prepare, I was still really sad and heartbroken. It didn’t take me long to decide that I wanted another dog. I decided a puppy wasn’t the right option for me, but finding something that was slightly older and looking for a new home was. I began searching, checking the local humane society, animal rescues and Kijiji. I was expecting a little time before I’d find something, but I was wrong.

Shortly after starting to look I came across a beautiful dog at the Peterborough Humane Society, his name was Felix and he is a 9 month old German Shepard and Husky Dog. Continue reading

What you want and what you need

Sometimes I have to take a step back and have to look at things in a real objective light. Twice in the past two weeks now, I have had an opportunity to snap up a new phone I want at a reasonable price. But when I sit down and ask myself why I want the phone – the only answer that comes to mind is that I simply want the phone.

There is quite literally nothing wrong with my current phone and in fact, I really do like it. The money could be used on other spaces in my life (some debt for example). This really breaks down to what I want and what I need, and what I want is a new phone, it is certainly not what I need. What I need to do is control my impulses and spending habits. 30 Day Challenges

30 day challenges are something I’ve tried already, a couple times, and I have failed at some of them. But it is now something I am going to do again. In the past my challenges have been a little too ambitious in scope and what lead to me missing my marks. For me anyways, sometimes discussing things makes me think I’ve accomplished what I really haven’t. Matt Cutts talks about how he does it in the following video: Continue reading
